All Mimesi jewels are created using traditional techniques of micro-mosaic filati created from glass smalti and set into the original recipe Roman stucco which is still secret.
What is Filati, Smalti, Tessera and Stucco?
Filati are made from glass smalti. Smalti is simply pigmented opaque glass. There are thousands of smalti colours. It comes in either a thick pancake of glass called a ‘pizza’, or a long rod rectangular in cross-section. Smalti is then cut into smaller tessera (or mosaic tiles) with a hammer and used to create wall mosaics. When molten, the smalti can be pulled with pliers into long needle-like strands of glass called Filati. Filati are then cut to length and set into the base filled with stucco ... a kind of cementious paste ... to create the design.
Mimesi micro-mosaics are set into quality precious metal bases of pure gold, sterling silver or rose gold. Each base is handcrafted by Italian goldsmiths using a fusion method. Sterling silver (also known as Silver 925 to indicate its high purity) also passes through a galvanising copper plating process to enhance it’s durability and impart the feel and touch sensation reminiscent of nineteenth century pieces.
